UCU Canons’ hopes of a quick recovery were dashed on Sunday as they fell 58-56 to the KCCA Panthers in a high-sprinting National Basketball League clash at ABJA Park, Naalya.
The defeat marks a stumbling block for the Canons, who had entered the second round with a head of steam, stacking up consecutive victories against the JKL Jaguars, Victoria Crocs, and Rezlife.
However, after a gruelling double-overtime loss to the City Oilers last Wednesday, the Canons seemed unable to find their finishing kick when it mattered most against KCCA.
The Panthers set the tone early, stifling the UCU offence to take a 17-14 lead in the first quarter. By the time both teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime, the Canons found themselves staring at a nine-point deficit.
The third quarter, however, told a different story. UCU emerged with renewed defensive intensity, suffocating the Panthers and clawing back to within a single point, trailing 38-37 heading into the final frame.
The momentum appeared to shift fully in UCU’s favour early in the fourth. Zachariah Ekirapa and Daniel Muganzi ignited the crowd with back-to-back triples, catapulting the Canons to a five-point lead with just seven minutes remaining.
But KCCA refused to blink. Stephen Otoa levelled the score at 51-51 with a clutch layup at the two-minute mark, setting the stage for a frantic finish.
In a game of inches where the lead traded hands like a hot potato, KCCA’s discipline at the stripe proved the difference; the Panthers sank five crucial free throws in the closing moments to ice the game.
The night belonged to Stanley Mugerwa, who put on a clinic for the Panthers. His dominant double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds anchored KCCA on both ends of the floor.
With this win, the KCCA Panthers improve to a 9-7 record for the season. More importantly, they have officially secured the double over the Canons, having previously beaten them 85-81 back in March.
On the other hand, the Canons’ focus now shifts to rediscovering the rhythm that saw them dominate the early stages of the second round.
