Mamelodi Sundowns claimed only their second Caf Champions League title after holding off hosts FAR Rabat in Morocco in a 1-1 draw to win 2-1 on aggregate.
In an entertaining game at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium, Mohamed Hrimat gave the hosts hope of overturning the first leg result converting from the spot in the 40th minute following a foul by Divine Lunga in the area.
But Teboho Mokoena, Man of the match restored parity with a contender for goal of the tournament with a leveler at the stroke of halftime.
With the away goals rule still in place in Africa, it meant that FAR Rabat now needed to score twice to edge the 2016 winners.
They had a chance to make a comeback in the second half when skipper Ronwen Williams gave away a penalty but became the hero saving Hrimat’s effort this time round.
From then on, Sundowns managed the game with highest quality and held on to give Miguel Cardoso his first title after playing three finals in a row.
From the team that won Sundowns’ first title ten years ago, Denis Onyango and Themba Zwane still around and claimed their second as well.
It is reported that Onyango was sent off the bench at halftime but in the end, it didn’t matter.
