Great Lakes Men’s T20 | Matchday 1

  • Morning: Bunyonyi Warriors 118/5 beat Victoria Strikers 116/9 by 5 wickets
  • Afternoon: Kyoga Avengers 176 all out beat Mburo Blasters 176 all out via Super Over

The opening day of the Great Lakes T20 Men’s League saw some amazing cricket, with the game between Kyoga Avengers and Mburo Blasters playing out a super over in the afternoon.

In a game full of runs in the afternoon, Kyoga Avengers failed to score one run off two balls, giving the Mburo Blasters a super over lifeline.

Cricket Cranes batters Fahad Mutagana (42) and Captain Riazat Ali Shah (31) had helped the Mburo Blasters pile on 176 in their quota of 20 overs, with Gerald Olipa (3/29) claiming the best bowling figures for Kyoga Avengers.

In the reply, Ronald Lutaaya (24) and Cyrus Kakuru (37) made inroads, but Robert Owili’s 45, which included four maximums and three boundaries, turned the game in favour of Kyoga Avengers.

Mburo Blasters only got control in the final over as the tail failed to chase down four runs off six balls. Captain Juma Miyaji stepped up with both ball and bat in the super over for his side. He clobbered two maximums off the bowling of Bilal Hassun and later defended 15 runs with the ball to lead his side to an entertaining win in front of an anxious crowd in Lugogo.

In the morning game, a low-scoring affair was won by the Bunyonyi Warriors by five wickets. Bunyonyi Warriors won the toss and elected to bowl, and they were vindicated by restricting the Victoria Strikers to a low total.

Gurjivan Singh (4/24) was the pick of the bowlers for Bunyonyi Warriors, with Captain Kenneth Waiswa (24), Perry Wazombe (20) and Simon Ssesazi (12) getting starts, but none of them converted.

Anas Baig (53) anchored the run chase for the Bunyonyi Warriors, and he got support from Captain Fred Achellam (22) and Cosmas Kyewuta (29) to get over the line inside 17 overs and win by 5 wickets.

Bunyonyi Warriors and Kyoga Avengers were the successful teams on Matchday 1 in a tournament that forms part of the preparation for both the U-19 side and Cricket Cranes ahead of some important qualifiers later this year.

The action continues on Saturday in Lugogo with Kyoga Avengers taking on Victoria Strikers in the morning, while Bunyonyi Warriors take on Mburo Blasters.
