Ivory Coast became the first African country to win a game at this year’s FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 result over South Americans Ecuador at the Philadelphia stadium.
Substitute Amad Diallo who features for Manchester United in the English Premier League was the hero with a 90th minute goal to give the West Africans a flying start in the championship.
This was the first win for Ivory Coast upon return to the FIFA World Cup since 12 years ago, and subsequently the first defeat for Ecuador in 22 months.
The victory puts Ivory Coast second in Group E behind Germany who whipped a hapless debutant Curacao 7-1 at the Houston stadium.
Kai Havertz scored a brace with the other goals coming from Felix Kalu Nmecha, Nico Cedric Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Christopher Brown and Deniz Undav.
Livano Shyrpn Liomar Comenencia got the consolation for Curacoa.

Group E returns on 20th June 2026 as red-hot Germany take on Ivory Coast at the Toronto stadium in Canada. Victory for either side will guarantee the winner a slot at the round of 32.
On 21st June, Ecuador will tussle against Curacao at Kansas city stadium in Kansas city.
Argentina is the tournament reigning champion.
