Black Pirates Rugby Club have organised a memorial day for fallen forward, Sydney Gongodyo, this Saturday at the Kings Park Arena.
This date coincides with Pirates’ second-leg semifinal encounter against the Heathens, after the Bweyogerere side secured a first-leg 15-03 win at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
The Pirates have lined up several activities for the Memorial Day, including a Panel Discussion on ‘Mob Action’ at midday.
“We encourage every Ugandan to join us this Saturday as we remember one of our own. Mob action is an actual problem that affects us as a country, and while we can’t bring Sydney back, we can try and see that there are no more Sydneys,” remarked Posha Aloyo, the campaign lead for this cause.
Soon after the panel discussion, there shall be a fundraising event and a ‘SydneyIsMe’ campaign launch just before kick-off.
“We shall also be launching our campaign against mob action called ‘SydneyIsMe/Sydney Yenze’ and mobilising funds for the Sydney Gongodyo fund that will go to support his estate. We are grateful for the support already rendered, and encourage everyone to come in big numbers and/or donate to the fund,” Aloyo urged Ugandans.
The Black Pirates have additionally earmarked July 5th for an 8.4-kilometre Memorial Walk from Ntinda, the scene of the unfortunate events, to Kings Park Arena, via Banda and Kireka.
As of now, the Uganda Police and relevant authorities have yet to give proper permission for this activity to move forward.
