France Head Coach Didier Deschamps has been granted permission to leave the team camp following the death of his mother Ginette Deschamps on Tuesday.
The decision was confirmed by the French Football Federation (FFF) with the President Philippe Diallo allowing the gaffer to fly back to France to attend the funeral.
In his absence, assistant coach Guy Stephan will take charge of the final group game against Norway slated for Friday.
“At this incredibly painful time, we wish the head coach great strength and assure him of everyone’s support,” the FFF said, adding that assistant coach Guy Stéphan will take temporary charge of the squad – including for Friday’s game in Massachusetts until Deschamps returns.
France has already progressed to the round of 32 after winning their first two group games, defeating France 3-1 and Iraq 3-0.
Deschamps, 57 captained France to winning the World Cup in 1998 and also led the team to glory in 2018 as coach.
