Practice for the different boat riders on Lake Victoria at Nakiwogo fish landing site

There is boiling excitement ahead of the 2026 Buganda Royal Regatta championship due this Saturday, 27th June at the Nakiwogo fish landing site in Entebbe Municipality.

On Wednesday, 24th June, the technical and administrative dockets visited the venue.

There were several planning engagements and explosive training drills on Lake Victoria among some teams present.

Busiro, Buvuma, Kyaddondo,Kyaggwe, Butambala, Bugerere,Busujju, Kabula, and Bulemeezi were among those who tested their skills under the keen watchful eyes of Batenga Nakisozi, Robert Lwanga and  Innocent Agunjira to ensure readiness for the big event.

“All the 18 Masaza’s (counties) will be represented at the 2026 Buganda Royal Regatta at Nakiwogo. The teams have been training well and thus ready for the competition where big prizes await the top performers. The routes will be well demarcated with safety a top priority for the competitors and spectators alike. We have the safety boat, life jackets for all and life savers (divers) who will be fully alert on the day” Agunjira revealed.

“We expect to commence the competitions as early as 9:00am until late. The participants will compete in the 500M and 1000M events. Therefore, come and enjoy exciting competitions with a number of women also taking part” Batenga noted.

Busiro Ssaza’s Beatrice Nakasumba is one of the athletes ready for the competition on the water.

Nakasumba rallies upon Kabaka’s subjects to come in big numbers.

 “I call upon the people from the different areas to come on Saturday. Us women, we are more than ready to showcase their talents in the game” she urged.

The event was last held in 2024 at the same venue with Busiro emerging top in the 500M race ahead of Buddu and Mawokota who finished second and third respectively.

In the 1000M, Mawokota clinched gold; Buddu earned silver and Buvuma in third place for bronze.

Seasoned businessman and administrator Eng. Ben Immanuel Misagga is the chairperson of the local organizing committee working hand-in-hand with the Buganda Kingdom ministry of sports, youth and arts under Salongo Robert Serwanga.

Canoeing and boat competition is one of the oldest traditional sports in Buganda Kingdom.
