South Africa joined co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 32 as the top two teams in Group A at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Bafana Bafana pipped a hard-fighting South Korea 1-0 at Estadio Monterrey.

Thapelo Maseko’s 63rd-minute goal won the game for Hugo Broos’ charges.

The Mamelodi Sundowns’ forward hit a strong left-footed low drive in the right-hand corner of the net past goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu to spark wild celebrations.

South Africa defended well for the rest of the game to finish in second place with four points.

They join Mexico, who made it 3-out-of-3 victories with a comprehensive 3-0 triumph over Czechia at the fully packed Mexico City stadium.

Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones, and substitute Alvaro Fidalgo were on the score-sheet for Mexico, all goals coming in the second half.

Chavez scored the opener in the 55th minute, Quinones added the other after 6 minutes following a goal melee.

In stoppage time, super substitute Fidalgo got the third with a strong curler just inside the goal area.

Mexico qualified as group leaders with nine points, with 6 goals scored and none conceded.

Groups D, E & F climaxing:

Up next is the final bend action in Groups D, E and F; debutants Curacao take on Cote d’Ivoire (Philadelphia Stadium), and at the same time, Ecuador face Germany in Group E at the New York New Jersey stadium, East Rutherford.

For Group F, Tunisia tussles against the Netherlands at the Kansas City Stadium as Japan plays Sweden in Arlington at the Dallas Stadium.

In Group D, Türkiye entertains the United States of America (USA) at the Los Angeles Stadium, Inglewood, and Paraguay will play Australia at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, Santa Clara.
