Cabo Verde players celebrate their historic qualification to the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

There were wild celebrations at the end of Cabo Verde’s goal-less draw with Saudi Arabia in Houston.

The debutants had qualified to the round of 32, in second place even without winning a single game.

Once again, Cabo Verde goalkeeper Josimar Jose Evora Dias Vozinha was called upon to make several saves that kept his team in contention.

Three draws in three matches put the West Africans on three points to finish second behind Spain who edged 10-man Uruguay 1-0 at the Estadio Guadalajara.

Cabo Verde had opened the campaign on a promising note earning a point off Spain after a courageous goal-less draw in the first game.

They then played to a 2-all draw in the second duel with Uruguay.

Cabo Verde’s midfielder Deroy Duarte was named man of the match. Duarte who features for Bulgarian first division entity Ludogorets Razgrad was born in Rotterdam city, Netherlands before he was nationalized by Cabo Verde.

Meanwhile, Spain confirmed their top status slot with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Uruguay.

Alex Baena scored the all-important goal in the 42nd minute. Uruguay finished the game a man less with a red card to Agustin Canobbio in stoppage time.

Uruguay was consequently eliminated alongside Saudi Arabia.
