Buganda Kingdom Premier, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga speaking at the launch of the Kabaka Birthday Run

Despite having only two teams progress to the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, Buganda Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga believes the performance of African teams has been superb.

Nine of the ten African nations progressed beyond group stages but only two have gone into the last sixteen.

Mayiga, an ardent football fan who associates with SC Villa and Arsenal, also bashed people who say that Africa doesn’t deserve all the ten places in the expanded World Cup.

“I don’t share sentiments with critics of the standards of football in Africa, who say the continent doesn’t deserve the 10 slots in the World Cup, 8 of whom have been eliminated to date,” his post read partly on X (former Twitter).

“Europe had 16 slots, 9 have been eliminated. America had 12, and 7 have been eliminated. Asia had 5 and they’re all eliminated, as have those from Oceania.

“All the 10 African countries have made a good account of themselves, and the tournament is a learning experience.”

Mayiga has also called on Africans to unite and support Morocco and Egypt who are still carrying the continent’s flag regardless of their skin complexion.

“Whatever the attitudes of the North Africans, they’re representatives of Africa, Morocco and (especially) Egypt (which depends on R. Nile), who are still in the race, ought to be supported by us.”

Only Tunisia was eliminated at the group stage amongst the ten African representatives in United States, Canada and Mexico.
