Black Pirates have completed the signing of scrumhalf Nicholas Kato from recent local rivals, Heathens.
Kato has made the move from the Kyadondo-based club where he rose through the ranks with his twin brother, Jeremiah Wasswa, who has since moved into coaching.
At Pirates, he joins an array of seasoned scrumhalves like Conrad Wanyama and Stephen ‘Buju’ Alul, who have been loyal servants to the Bweyogerere side.
The Pirates have boasted of squad depth in the recent past, but a few questions have lingered in the half-back department.
Recently, William Nkore has been successfully deputised by Isaac Massa in the Uganda Cup and Timothy Kisiga in the premiership, the latter pair providing due cover to the preferred starting fly-half.
At scrumhalf, however, the Pirates have the blessing of the ever-fit and present Wanyama and Alul, hence pushing out the other numbers like Moses Olupot, who departed for the Kakira Simbas.
The Kings Park Arena is a place Kato will forever cherish as he made his debut there for the senior Rugby Cranes team in a 30 – 08 victory over Zambia in the 2023 Victoria Cup.
In the 15s game, he walks straight into the Pirates team as a starter or cover, with his pace, quick thinking and playmaking abilities making him worthy of a place in the Pirates set up ahead of the National 7s.
