Cricket Uganda adopted a new constitution as one of its requirements by the National Council of Sports in compliance with the new sports law.
The new sports law has been biting, and as the deadline to claim victims approaches, sports federations have been running around the clock to get the certificate from the National Council of Sports.
Cricket Uganda had to go against tradition by admitting new members who include five regional cricket associations. The regional associations join the eight-member clubs of Cricket Uganda, and the power to run the game will be vested in these members.
Cricket Uganda, for long, has been an exclusive club for its eight member clubs; the new requirement makes the regional associations a decision-making voice in how cricket is run at the top.
The regional associations include Northern Uganda, Southern Uganda, Eastern Uganda, Western Uganda and Central Uganda. Each region will have to select two delegates to represent it at the Cricket Uganda Annual General Meeting, and two regional representatives will be elected to the Cricket Uganda board.
At the Special General Meeting held on Saturday in Lugogo, over 120 districts were represented, and since Cricket Uganda is chasing federation status, they need to have spread of the game in at least 110 districts of Uganda.
Cricket Uganda has a tight deadline of making sure they are compliant by July 26, lest they face the consequences of the law. The new law came into force in 2023, but the sports federations were given at least two years to get their houses in order.
Any sports federation that fails to comply with the new regulations misses out on the support from Uganda and could even lose its right to run sports in the country.
