Uganda Rugby is lacing up for the return of floodlights rugby with the Stone City 7s lined up for Friday night.
Floodlights rugby had become a staple on the Uganda calendar just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world in early 2020, forcing a closure of all public events.
With the Stone City 7s lined up to set the pace for the 2026 National 7s series, floodlights rugby is one of the ways to bring back excitement for this brand of rugby.
The last round of floodlights rugby had mouth-watering action with Friday night games like that famous 06-00 Heathens victory over the KOBs, or the 2020 Valentine’s Day encounter between the Buffaloes and Black Pirates that ended in a 15-10 win for the Pirates at Kyadondo.
Since the return to action on the local scene, fans and players haven’t been treated to floodlight action, save for the Uganda Legends game against a touring UK Tritons English side in late 2025. This is an opportunity for the so-called ‘Covid Fans’, a now-not derogatory term coined to rattle recent rival fans, to enjoy competitive night action for the first time.
The Stone City 7s shall carry on from Friday night, through Saturday, and be concluded on Sunday morning. Thereafter, the Uganda and Tunisia U20 teams shall measure swords as they prepare for the U20 Barthes Cup to be played at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, from August 5 to 16.
