Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC will ignite their 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign at the Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali as they face Djiboutian champions Garde Républicaine in their Group A opener.
The Venoms, who arrived in Kigali earlier this week with a strong 24-man squad, are seeking to translate their domestic domination into regional silverware—a trophy that has eluded the Kitende-based side.
Ahead of the highly anticipated kickoff, Vipers SC skipper Milton Karisa made it clear that the team is fully focused and intent on making a strong opening statement in Kigali.
Speaking ahead of the opener against Garde Républicaine, the speed-merchant forward emphasised the importance of starting the tournament on a high note in what is widely regarded as the tournament’s group of death, which also features Rwandan giants APR FC and Kenya’s Gor Mahia.
“We know the challenge that lies ahead of us in this tournament. Starting against Garde Républicaine is a massive test, but our target as a squad is clear: we want to win every match as if it’s a final,” Karisa remarked.
“The squad is motivated, the new players have settled in quickly, and we are here in Rwanda to bring the trophy home.”
The match against Garde Républicaine marks the first official competitive fixture for newly appointed head coach Denis Lavagne.
The French tactician takes charge of a revamped Venoms side that boasts a mix of experienced stars and high-profile arrivals.
Fans will be eager to see the return of high-profile stars Farouk Miya, who rejoins after a decade playing in Europe, and Congolese goal-machine Cesar Manzoki.
They are joined by new signings including Gabonese custodian Loyce Mbaba, midfielder Joel Sserunjogi, and defender Nicholas Mwere.
While Vipers SC head into the encounter as favorites on paper, Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine are no push-overs. Known for their physical and disciplined setup, the Djiboutian outfit will be eager to pull off a statement upset and ruin Vipers’ group stage opener.
Beyond regional glory and the $30,000 top prize, the tournament serves as crucial preparation for Vipers ahead of their upcoming CAF Champions League preliminary rounds.
