Victoria Pearls picked up their second win of the Capricorn Series in Namibia with a marginal five-run win against their East African neighbours Tanzania.
Tanzania won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that meant that they wouldn’t allow Uganda to be comfortable with chasing, which is their default decision every time they win the toss.
Janet Mbabazi and Stephanie Nampiina could only put on 27 for the first wicket. Still, Proscovia Alako (20) continued her rich vein of form, and her partnership with Rita Musamali (37) moved the score very nicely.
A rare guard attack from Immaculate Nakisuyi put pressure at the back end, with a well-crafted 33 off 21 propelling the total to 132/6 in their quota of 20 overs. The knock from Nakisuyi was the difference between a below-par total and something that could turn the game in favour of Uganda.
In the chase, Tanzania Captain Neema Justine (38) and Mtae Saum (31) put on 63 for the 1st wicket, and the intent was to keep the pressure on Uganda. However, once they got rid of Saum, the run scoring slowed and a passage of wickets completely derailed the run chase for Tanzania.
The slow bowling options of Consy Aweko and Immaculate Nakisuyi put in a good shift in the final two overs to make sure Tanzania never got ahead and to make sure Uganda closed out a five-run win. A comeback win for Uganda after going down in the super over against hosts Namibia.
The Victoria Pearls will take on Hong Kong China tomorrow afternoon when the second round of the tournament starts.
