Tanzania put up a remarkable performance to earn a stunning victory over giants South Africa at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
In their group C opener, the Twiga Stars showed character to secure a late 2-1 win over the Banyana Banyana at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca.
Diana Msewa fired Tanzania into the lead in the 37th minute against the run of play, finishing off at the near post past experience goalkeeper Andile Dlamini.
Tanzania had earlier survived when Lebohang Ramalepe back pass caught Dlamini off line but the latter recovered in time to prevent an own goal.
Like it was the case two years ago when the two teams faced off, Bambanani Mbane got the equalizer for South Africa shortly before the break, reacting quickest to head home from a rebound when goalkeeper Idrisa saved the initial effort.
Second half substitute Hasnath Ubamba was the heroine for Tanzania when she produced the moment of magic in the 86th minute, scoring the winner.
The result means Tanzania go second in Group B on three points same as Ivory Coast who defeated Burkina Faso 4-0.
Tanzania will return to action on Friday against Burkina Faso while Ivory Coast will be up against wounded South Africa.
