Reigning Champions Nigeria will seek to make a perfect start to their title defence as they face a tricky outfit in Malawi on Tuesday (11PM EAT).
The highly anticipated clash will take place at the Al Madina Stadium in the hear of Morocco’s capital Rabat.
It is a clash of two contrasting ambitions. Whereas Nigeria have dominated African football with ten titles to their name, Malawi over the past few years have shown desire and progress.
On paper, Nigeria proves too strong given their star-studded team but Malawi playing at this stage for the first time have the Chawinga ( Temwa and Tabitha) sisters to bank on.
Captain Tabitha Chawinga who plays for Lyon believes this is a dream come true for her and the team.
It was my dream to play in the WAFCON. The time has come. We know Nigeria’s worth. They are a great nation but we must focus on ourselves. Our players need to compete without any inferiority complex,” Chawinga stated.
On the other hand, Nigeria’s skipper Rasheedat Ajibade who was named the Most Valuable Player at the last edition indicated that the team is only focused on winning.
“For us, a good performance means taking all three points. That is what really matters in a tournament like this. If you play well but don’t win, it is pointless. We approach every opponent with humility, but our objective is clear.” She said.
The other group C game will see Zambia face Egypt who are returning to WAFCON for the first time since 2016.
