Malawi continued with their expressive performance at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after overcoming Egypt in their second group game on Saturday.
The Scorchers who are just making their debut at the tournament stunned defending Champions Nigeria, winning 3-2. This was followed up by a 3-1 victory over Egypt despite ending the game with a player less.
Rose Kadzere, Faith Chinzimu and Temwa Chawinga were on the scoresheet for Malawi while substitute Eman Kassem got the consolation for Egypt.
The breakthrough came in the 35th minute with Kadzere finishing from close range when Chawinga teed her up.
Chinzimu doubled the advantage shortly before halftime, reacting quickest to score from a rebound after her initial effort had been saved.
After restart, Malawi were reduced to ten players with Rose Alufandika sent off for fouling Habiba Hafez as she raced through on goal.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Malawi showed their quality and stretched their lead further in the 68th minute through Chawinga.
Egypt pulled one back through Kassem but it was not enough to stage a comeback.
Malawi top Group C on six points and will need a point in their final group game against Zambia who lost 1-0 to Nigeria.
In the other hand, Egypt will have a mountain to climb against Nigeria in their final group game still with faint hopes of progressing to the quarterfinals.
