Uganda Premier League outfit SC Villa has confirmed shirt number 15 will be retired in respect of the late skipper David ‘Colgate’ Owori.
The defender was attacked by thugs on Tuesday evening on his way home, and he was pronounced dead a day later at Case Hospital in Kampala.
During a requiem mass organised at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Nsambya on Thursday, the club confirmed the shirt number which Owori wore will be phased out.
“Jersey 15 to be retired. RIP Colgate,” reads a statement on the club’s social media platforms.
Owori, who featured for among other clubs Proline and Vipers in the Uganda Premier League, was part of the SC Villa squad that won a record-extending 17th league title in 2023/24.
He captained SC Villa to the FUFA Super 8 trophy last season and even featured in the first game of the current series in the 1-1 draw with Maroons on Saturday.
Owori, aka Colgate, was born on September 28, 1998, in Tororo but grew up in Makindye, Kampala.
He started his career at Nsambya Young Academy and later Lukuli United before he moved to eight-time league champions Vipers SC in 2016.
Owori also had a stint with Proline FC before he joined SC Villa for the first spell that lasted from 2018 to 2021.
He moved to Spain and Sweden, where he featured for Velez CF and Utiskitens BK respectively, but rejoined SC Villa in 2023.
The late will be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Makunga, Tororo District.
