Behind every championship performance lies a trial by fire, and for Namuwongo Blazers head coach Stephen ‘Escodata’ Nyeko, navigating the high-stakes final series required a harsh dose of self-reflection before the celebrations could begin.
Speaking to Kawowo Sports after guiding the Nam Blazers through a gruelling playoff series, an elated Nyeko didn’t mince words about the moments when momentum almost slipped through their fingers.
The turning point came when his side briefly abandoned their tactical discipline in favour of individual heroics.
“It was a long and challenging series, but for the games we lost, we got off script,” Nyeko shared with Kawowo Sports “We were selfish and wanted to play hero basketball. We were not sharing the ball more and often ignoring our sets.”
The wake-up call forced the Nam Blazers back to the drawing board. Nyeko and his technical staff confronted the lapses head-on, preaching patient ball movement, defensive accountability, and trust in the system over individual stardom. The adjustment proved decisive.
The shift from self to squad unlocked the Blazers’ full roster depth. Rather than relying on a single marquee performer, the title charge became a collective effort, with different role players stepping into the spotlight at critical moments.
“This team is not a one-man show, it is team basketball that can give us victory,” Nyeko emphasised. “I am happy that as a team we have all given our best and we have constantly reminded players that they will get their time. That explains why different players have stepped up on various occasions.”
For Nyeko, standing at the summit is the ultimate validation for a squad that answered the call when pushed to the limit.
“I am the happiest person to have defended the championship. It’s never easy to defend a championship, but here we are. We came to pick what we deserved,” he declared.
“I am happy that the boys have understood the assignment as we continue to grow as a team.”
As the dust settles on their campaign, Nyeko’s message to the rest of the league is clear, individual talent wins games, but sticking to the script wins championships.
The Blazers will now shift their focus to the continental assignment as they aim to qualify for the BAL group stages.
