Pius Obuya was on target during his club’s spirited 2-0 win over KCCA in the famous Lugogo derby on match day one of the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League.

The former Uganda U-17 and U-20 offensive midfielder scored on the stroke of full time to double NEC’s goal advantage after Richard Basangwa’s opener in the first half.

Obuya started the game on the bench and replaced midfielder Enrique Lubwama with 20 minutes to play.

He dedicated the goal to his dear family. “I dedicate my first goal at NEC to my dear family who have been loyal to me throughout my football journey,” Obuya stated.

Obuya joined NEC mid-way last season following a three-year stint in Serbia.

He had earlier played at Maroons and had been destined to join KCCA before the deal fell through at the 11th hour.

NEC and Obuya return to action on match day two this Tuesday, 1st September 2026 against Lugazi at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo, Kampala.

During their first game of the season, UPDF, who are now coached by NEC’s former coach Hussein Mbalangu, played to a goalless draw with newly promoted Kataka at the Hamz Stadium (Nakivubo War Memorial Grounds).
