Ugandan Premier League champions Vipers SC are set to kick off their CAF Champions League campaign this Saturday as they welcome Mauritanian giants FC Nouadhibou to St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, for a crucial first-leg tie.
Ahead of the highly anticipated clash, Vipers SC head coach Denis Lavagne expressed immense confidence in his squad’s readiness following a rigorous period of pre-season preparations and international friendly matches.
“I think we have prepared well ahead of this game. We have won several games against international opponents. In football, you always have to prepare and be ready,” stated Lavagne.
“It’s going to be a very difficult game because of the level we are at, but we are ready, and I am sure the players have been motivated enough.”
The French tactician acknowledged the stern test that awaits the Venoms against a seasoned FC Nouadhibou side.
However, he emphasized that squad unity and home support will be pivotal if the Kitende-based side is to gain a vital first-leg advantage before heading to Mauritania for the return fixture.
“We call upon the fans to come and back up the team because I have told the players the same thing: that we need to be united if we are to get something positive from the game.”
Having tested themselves against regional powerhouses including Kenya’s Gor Mahia during their pre-season campaign Vipers SC enter Saturday’s clash intent on establishing early control in the two-legged qualifier.
FC Nouadhibou, regular competitors on the continent who featured in the 2023–24 group stage, present a formidable obstacle.
For Lavagne and the Venoms, securing a positive home result and a clean sheet in front of a packed St Mary’s Stadium will be a top priority.
