Busitema University continues to showcase its growing sporting talent on the continental stage with a 15-member team set to represent the institution at the 12th Federation of African University Sports (FASU) Games.
The 12th FASU Games will be staged in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, between the 8th and 16th September 2026.
The team will compete in three disciplines; athletics, tennis, and chess placing Busitema University among institutions from across Africa expected to converge in Cairo for one of the continent’s major university sporting events.
The 12th FASU Games are expected to attract more than 136 universities from 26 countries and will feature competition in 21 sports, including athletics, chess, tennis and taekwondo among others.
The Games will be hosted at Cairo University, co-hosted by The American University in Cairo, Budr University in Cairo and the British University in Egypt.
This allows universities in Africa to come together to compete, build networks and celebrate university sports.
Busitema University’s delegation will be led by the Dean of Students; Joseph Erogo Wanyama and the technical delegate will be the Deputy Chief of Sports, Dr. Agnes Baluka Masajja, who will guide the team through the continental competition.
For Busitema University, the participation represents an important opportunity to expose its student-athletes to a higher level of competition while giving them a platform to measure their abilities against some of Africa’s best university sporting talent, visit the oldest country in the world that also represents Africa in the world cup.

The Cairo Games also provide a wider platform for Busitema University to strengthen its visibility within the African university community.
Beyond competition, the event brings together student-athletes, university officials and sports administrators from different countries, creating opportunities for interaction, networking and future collaboration.

The University’s participation in athletics, tennis and chess reflects the diversity of sporting disciplines in which its students are developing their skills.
While athletics will test speed, strength and endurance, tennis will demand technical precision and discipline, while chess will challenge strategic thinking and concentration.
The decision to send a team to the continental competition also underlines the University’s recognition of sport as an important part of student development.
Participation in competitive sports helps students cultivate discipline, teamwork, resilience, leadership and confidence—qualities that complement their academic and professional development.

For the athletes, however, the focus will be firmly on competition.
Their assignment in Cairo will be to perform strongly, gain valuable international experience and carry the Busitema University name with distinction on the African continent.
The University will also have an opportunity to engage with institutions from across the continent and explore connections that can contribute to the development of university sports.
The growing emphasis on international university sports provides institutions such as Busitema University with a platform to showcase talent while building relationships beyond national and regional borders.
As preparations continue, the athletes will be looking to turn their training and determination into strong performances when competition gets underway in Cairo.
Their participation signals Busitema University’s ambition to give student talent opportunities beyond the classroom and to place the University’s name alongside institutions participating in the growing African university sports movement.
The Vice-Chancellor of Busitema University, Professor Paul Waako, officiated at the official flag-off ceremony for the team, wishing the players and officials fruitful deliberations at the FASU Games.
Busitema University was the champion in the FASU mini games championship in 2022, won a silver trophy in the 2024 FASU tennis slum at Makerere University and is the bronze medalist of the FASU King of Africa Rugby 2024 that was hosted by USIU in Nairobi – Kenya.
Meanwhile, Nkumba University will represent the country in women’s football.
