• Mbarara City 0-0 NEC

Mbarara City and NEC FC played out a goalless draw in an intense Uganda Premier League (UPL) encounter at Rwamwanja Stadium, Kamwenge, on Friday afternoon.

Heading into the fixture, NEC were on a high following back-to-back victories, whereas Mbarara City were looking to bounce back after dropping points in their league opener.

NEC head coach Badru Kaddu made two alterations to his starting lineup, handing starts to defender Mustafa Mujuzi and winger Emmanuel Kulanga. Notably, in-form forward Richard Basangwa was left out of the matchday squad.

The side started on the front foot, creating their first major threat in the 17th minute when James Jarieko swung a dangerous cross into the box. However, Mbarara City goalkeeper Bashir Ssekagya reacted quickly to clear the danger.

Ten minutes later, Jarieko turned provider again, setting up Innocent Media, who neatly slotted the ball into the back of the net. The goal was, however, ruled out as the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside.

NEC suffered a setback five minutes before the interval when Kulanga sustained an injury and could not continue. He was replaced by Muhammad Kagawa Ssenoga.

In the closing stages of the match, NEC threw everything forward in search of a late winner, but Mbarara City’s disciplined and resolute backline held firm to keep them at bay until the final whistle.

The result leaves NEC third on the league table with seven points from three matches, while Mbarara City occupy 14th place with a single point from two outings.
