Sunday afternoon at the Lugogo Cricket Oval brought high drama as the defending champions, Ismaili Community Cricket Club, stepped onto the pitch to ignite their title defence against a formidable Kutchi Tigers side in Group A of the UG20 action.
The morning clash immediately set a breathless pace after the Kutchi Tigers won the toss and elected to bat. Wielding the willow with intent, they carved out a competitive 159/7 in their allotted 20 overs.
Mayur Hirani anchored the innings with a gritty 53 off 51 balls, peppering the boundary with four fours and a maximum. Nitin Jeshani provided late fireworks, racing to a brisk 30 off just 11 balls with three fours and three towering sixes, while Steven Wabwose chipped in with a quickfire 28.
Kamran Wali Khan proved the pick of the Ismaili attack, returning disciplined figures of 2/30, supported by single strikes from Shehran Ali, Junaid Khan, Ghulam Hunzai, and Oloka Pius.
When the champions began their chase, the skies above Lugogo threatened to steal the show. Ismaili Community roared out of the gates, reaching 86/1 in just 8.2 overs before the heavens opened. Shehzad Khan was in scintillating form, blitzing 47 off 31 balls with nine boundaries and a six, while Kamran Wali Khan remained unbeaten on 26.
As the downpour refused to relent, the DLS method intervened. With a revised target of 57, the champions were handed a 30-run victory, drawing first blood in the double header.
There was no let-up when the clouds parted for the afternoon skirmish. Reduced to a frantic 14-over sprint, Ismaili Community put on a batting masterclass, launching an assault that yielded a staggering 164/5. Pius Oloka stole the spotlight, unleashing an unbeaten 55 off a mere 24 deliveries, punctuated by six fours and four colossal sixes. Ghulam Hunzai joined the carnage, smashing an unbeaten 34 off 10 balls with five maximums, while Shehzad Khan added 31 off 14 to leave Kutchi Tigers staring down a daunting target of 165.
The Tigers refused to go down quietly. Steven Wabwose played the innings of his life, orchestrating a breathtaking, unbeaten 86 off 33 balls that included eight fours and six sixes.
Yet, the mountain proved just a fraction too high. Despite Wabwose’s heroics, Kutchi Tigers were restricted to 154/6 as Kamran Wali Khan, Oloka Pius, and Junaid Khan shared the bowling spoils with two wickets apiece, sealing a nail-biting 10-run triumph and a triumphant opening sweep for the reigning titleholders.
Across the wider UG20 landscape, the day was marked by fierce battles and split fortunes. Over at the Jinja SS Oval in Group D, JACC and the Mukono Warriors shared the spoils, with the Warriors taking the morning match by 33 runs before JACC bounced back with a three-wicket victory in the evening.
At the Florida Oval, Tornado Cricket Club similarly split their series with Soroti City, claiming a 12-run morning win in Group A only to drop the afternoon fixture by 60 runs.
Meanwhile, drama unfolded at the GM Sugar Oval as Iganga Cricket Club edged Africa Cricket Club by a single wicket in the morning thriller, only to forfeit the afternoon encounter.
Down at the Entebbe Cricket Oval, Kutchi Tigers B bucked the trend of shared results, putting on a clinical display to sweep Avengers Cricket Club with a nine-run morning win followed by a 13-run victory in the afternoon Group C clashes.
