The roar that shook the Uhuru Stadium on Sunday afternoon was a celebration of victory and a definitive statement of intent from the Tanzanian capital.
Simba Sports Club delivered a masterclass in attacking ruthlessness, tearing Malawi’s Mighty Wanderers apart in a 6-1 demolition that secured a staggering 7-1 aggregate triumph and safely escorted the Red Devils into the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
For the visitors from Blantyre, the afternoon devolved into a waking nightmare almost immediately. Carrying a slender 1-0 deficit from the first leg at the Bingu National Stadium, Wanderers needed defensive discipline.
Instead, their backline imploded within the opening exchanges. In form 35-year-old maestro Clatous Chama capitalised on a defensive mix-up to break the deadlock in the 7th minute, doubling the aggregate advantage and setting the tone for a long, punishing afternoon.
Simba’s attack operated with frightening synergy. Senegalese forward Libasse Gueye added a second in the 27th minute before Chama struck again in the 34th, completing a polished first-half brace that left the Malawian giants staring down a 4-0 aggregate chasm.
Wanderers frantically sought a lifeline. The bench summoned a triple substitution, hauling off Lameck Mithi, Promise Kamwendo, and skipper Emmanuel Nyirenda to inject fresh legs. The tactical shuffle flickered briefly into life on the stroke of halftime when Clement Nyondo drew a foul inside the area. Isaac Kaliati stepped up, expertly converting the spot-kick to send the travelling faithful into the break with a glint of hope at 3-1 on the night.
Any dreams of an improbable second-half miraculous comeback, however, were brutally extinguished after the restart.
A calamitous error from Wanderers goalkeeper Dalitso Nkhungwa gifted Gueye his second of the match in the 68th minute, restoring Simba’s three-goal cushion. Far from slowing down, the hosts turned the screw in the dying embers of the contest. Substitute Keletso Makgalwa added a fifth in the 87th minute, before Morice Abraham rubbed salt into the deep wounds with a sixth deep into stoppage time, sealing the comprehensive 6-1 rout.
With domestic dominance firmly translated onto the continental stage alongside Young Africans SC, Simba now turn their sights toward the next hurdle. The Red Devils advance to face either Fomboni FC or Equatorial Guinean side FC 15 de Agosto, who hold a commanding 4-0 lead from the first leg over Comoros’ Fomboni FC ahead of their October 3 return leg.
Simba will travel to Equatorial Guinea or Comoros for the first leg between October 16-18, before returning to Dar es Salaam for the decisive second leg between October 23-25.
Sunday’s action also brought varied fortunes for regional and continental hopefuls across the preliminary bracket. Libya’s Al Swehly SC comfortably booked their ticket, completing a dominant 4-0 aggregate sweep over Zanzibar’s KVZ FC, capped by a 3-0 away victory following their narrow 1-0 win in Misrata.
Meanwhile, Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou broke hearts elsewhere by grinding out a tense goalless draw at the Stade Cheikha Ould Boidiya to eliminate Vipers SC on the away goals rule after a 1-1 aggregate stalemate.
Elsewhere, Egyptian powerhouse Pyramids FC flexed their continental muscles with a 5-1 thrashing of Kenya’s Gor Mahia at the Air Defense Stadium, cruising through 7-1 on aggregate.
