Upper Volta’s push to turn last season’s runners-up finish into a title challenge faces another early test when Greater Mukono visit Kasubi on Sunday.

The sides meet at 6 pm at Upper Volta Bar in the headline clash of Matchday 2 of the 2026 National Pool League, with just a point separating them after the opening round.

Upper Volta collected seven points from two wins and a draw on Day One, a start that keeps them among the early contenders.

The runners-up have retained a strong squad after last season’s campaign and began this one with a narrow battle against defending champions RoxBerry.

Their Day One line-up featured Peter Mayinja, Joseph Rwotokonya, Yudah Ssembuusi, Mansoor Bwanika, Caesar Chandiga, George Lukwago and Siraje Lubega.

Greater Mukono arrive with eight points and sit third, but their opening day could easily have ended differently.

At iTaano Arena, Pot It pushed them to the wire before Jamil Kateregga scratched an easy ball in the centre pocket in the final frame.

The mistake handed Mukono a chance to force a shootout.

The new league rules do not allow drawn matches, with penalties deciding the additional bonus point. Mukono converted two attempts to escape with it. They settled quickly afterwards, beating E-Play 15-5 before edging Sinkers 11-9.

The results gave Mukono two wins and a draw, matching Upper Volta’s opening-day record. Both are among the early pack and with the table still tightly bunched, the final black ball could carry more weight than usual.

However, their improved start has followed roster changes in previous windows, with experienced players including Julius Ssemanda and Willy Yiga joining the squad.

At the top, Scrap Buyers lead on nine points after three wins from three matches. They have scored 37 goals and conceded 23, giving them a goal difference of 14.

RoxBerry are second on eight points after two wins and a draw. The champions have scored 43 goals and conceded 17 for a goal difference of 26, while collecting one bonus point.

Greater Mukono are third on eight points, followed by Capital Night and Upper Volta both on seven.

They are followed by Adi’s, Sinkers, Club 408, Pot It, Tororo Tigers, Corporate Shooters, Nakawa, Mbale, Kireka, Wakiso City and E-Play.
