Saturday results:

  • Group A: Ethiopia 0-4 Tanzania
  • Group B: Sudan 0-1 Uganda
  • Group C: Kenya 1-1 South Sudan

Tanzania outsmarted Ethiopia 4-0 in group A of the on-going 2026 CECAFA U-20 championship at the Uhuru stadium on Saturday night.

A brace apiece from Bashiri Salum Kibaila and Juma Sagwe inspired the hosts to the second victory of the competition.

This followed their opening 3-0 victory over Rwanda.

Against Ethiopia, the hosts showed intent to attack.

As early as the third minute, Juma Abushiri had a solo run thwarted by goalkeeper Biruk Zelalem Yifa.

Ethiopia’s Seyfedin Umer Kedir shot over from close range in the 27th minute.

On the half hour mark, Kibaila scored off a rebound coming off the right lower post.

Three minutes later, Ethiopia reacted when Kasaw Dawit Yirdaw hit the crossbar from a free-kick.

Abubakar Othman tapped wide a free-kick from close range and Sagwe assisted Kibaila for the second goal on the stroke of half time.

At the start of the second half, two goal hero Kibaila was rested for the fresh legs of Farid Mzalendo.

Sagwe made it three in the 54th minute and doubled his personal tally three minutes later as the hosts ran riot.

Tempers flared towards the end of the game when a Ethiopian player Kasaw Dawit Yirdaw pushed a Tanzanian and only survived the wrath of the referee with a caution.

Tanzania thus tops Group A with six points and progresses to the semi-finals, to face Burundi.

Uganda, who earlier beat Sudan 1-0 will take on the same opponent during Tuesday’s semi-finals.

The two finalists will advance to AFCON U-20 finals.
