Lakeside Oval in Entebbe witnessed a gripping narrative of resilience, collapse, and redemption as Wanderers Cricket Club and Centurion Cricket Club played out a chaotic, split-series thriller to open Wanderers’ Men’s UG20 campaign on Saturday.
Group B cricket rarely delivers drama quite like this, with the double header serving up low-scoring tension, a Super Over spectacle and a pulsating afternoon rematch that kept everyone on edge.

The morning game had everything, starting when Wanderers won the toss and elected to bat, only to be completely dismantled for 74 in 13.2 overs. Julius Okema fought hard to top score with 16, aided by Abdulshakur Doka with 14 and Ivan Kakande adding 11.
Centurion’s bowling attack was venomous, spearheaded by Allan Ssemakula, who tore through the lineup with four wickets for 12 runs, while Leon Kigozi and Ali Balidawa provided vital support by picking two wickets apiece.
Yet, cricket is a game of shifting momentum, and Centurion soon discovered that cracking the Wanderers defence was no simple task. In a mirror image of a batting collapse, Centurion were also dismissed for 74, this time in 15.3 overs, setting the stage for a heart-pounding Super Over after the scores finished dead level.
Abdallah Lubega led Centurion’s initial reply with 18, alongside Jackson Asiku with 12 and Fred Achelam with 10. For Wanderers, Ashiraf Ssentume was the ultimate destroyer with four wickets for 13 runs, complemented by Okema who claimed two for 14. But when the dust settled, Centurion held their nerve brilliantly in the Super Over to snatch the morning thriller.
If the morning game was a low-scoring war of attrition, the afternoon duel was another fierce scrap that tested the absolute limits of both sides, though Wanderers eventually mustered enough runs to seal a hard-earned seven-run victory. Batting first again, Wanderers posted 104 for eight in their allotted 20 overs.

Eric Mukisa anchored the innings with a gritty 34 off 46 balls, hitting a four and a six, while Kakande added a fluent 32 off 32 balls, striking two fours and a maximum.
Centurion’s Kigozi responded magnificently with a five-wicket haul for 18 runs, yet his heroic effort ultimately could not prevent Wanderers from setting a competitive target.
Centurion’s afternoon chase was valiantly led by Brian Mark Masaba, who compiled 31 from 30 balls, and Balidawa, who contributed 30. Yet, Wanderers continually struck at crucial, game-defining moments to crush any hopes of a clean sweep. Kakande returned with the ball to claim three wickets for 23 runs, Ssentume maintained his lethal form with three for 19, and Mark Ruhweza applied the finishing touches by returning two for nine as Centurion were finally bowled out for 97 in 19.3 overs.
When the smoke cleared over the Entebbe breeze, both sides walked away from the double header with a victory apiece, a fair reflection of a fiercely contested day of cricket. For Wanderers, it marked an encouraging and character-building start to their first Match Day in Group B of the Men’s UG20, while Centurion, playing on their second match day in the group, will take plenty of positives to regroup quickly ahead of their next outing.
