Uganda’s professional golfers head into the 2026 Rwanda Open with plenty of confidence, but few will attract as much attention as Ronald Rugumayo, who arrives in Kigali riding a remarkable run of form.
Rugumayo has been one of the standout players on the East African circuit in recent weeks, winning the Uganda Golf Open, the MTN Pro Tee and, most recently, the Pearl of Africa Golf Series. The run has put him firmly among the players to watch as the Rwanda Open gets underway at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas.
He will now attempt to make it four victories in succession, although the challenge in Kigali will be another level of competition as the Rwanda Open makes an important step in its history by being staged as a Sunshine Tour event for the first time.
From Thursday, September 24 to Sunday, September 27, Kigali will host a 113-player field competing over four rounds, with professionals from the Sunshine Tour sharing the stage with golfers progressing through the Sunshine Development Tour pathway.
Thirteen Ugandan golfers are part of the Sunshine Development Tour contingent at this year’s Rwanda Open, underlining the growing depth of professional golf in the country.
Joining Rugumayo are Grace Kasango, Ronald Otile, Phillip Kasozi, Hussein Bagalana, Abraham Ainamani, David Kamulindwa, Rodell Gaita, Willy Deus Kitata, Abbey Bagalana, Davis Kato, Marvin Kibirige, and Denis Anguyo.
Their presence gives Uganda one of the largest national representations among the development-tour players and provides the country’s professionals with another opportunity to test themselves against some of the region’s established names.
For Rugumayo in particular, the tournament provides a chance to extend a purple patch that has seen him rise to the occasion at major domestic events.
His recent Pearl of Africa Golf Series triumph was especially significant, coming at a tournament that formed part of the Sunshine Development Tour East Africa Swing. That victory was his maiden Sunshine Development Tour title and came at the sixth leg of the regional circuit.
Now, only days later, he returns to action with momentum on his side.
Kenya provides the biggest representation among the Sunshine Development Tour players, with 11 golfers making the trip to Kigali. The group includes Sunshine Tour members Njoroge Kibugu, Greg Snow and Dismas Indiza, alongside Adel Balala, Sammy Mulama, Daniel Nduva, Mutahi Kibugu, Taimur Malik, David Wakhu, Jastas Madoya and Nelson Mudanyi.
Rwanda has two representatives in Celestine Nsanzuwera and Aloys Nsabimana, while Paul Chidale of Malawi, Nigeria’s Godwin Okoko and Tanzania’s Nuru Mollel complete the 25-player Sunshine Development Tour contingent.
Sunshine Development Tour
The Sunshine Development Tour, launched in 2025 by the Sunshine Tour in partnership with IMG Kenya Limited and Golf Plus, was created to provide professional and elite amateur golfers across Africa with a structured route towards the highest levels of the game.
Rather than players having to make the difficult jump directly onto international professional circuits, the development tour gives them regular opportunities to compete in professional-standard events within their own region.
The East Africa Swing has taken that opportunity to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania, while the wider Development Tour has also expanded into West Africa.
The tournaments are designed to replicate the demands of professional golf, with multi-round competitions, professional fields and opportunities to collect valuable ranking points. Professionals can earn Official World Golf Ranking points, while eligible amateurs can compete for World Amateur Golf Ranking points.
For players who consistently perform, the pathway can lead to opportunities on the main Sunshine Tour and Sunshine Ladies Tour.
With the Rwanda Open stepping onto the Sunshine Tour stage for the first time, Kigali is set to become the latest arena in which East Africa’s golfers can measure themselves against a wider professional field.
