The 2026 Independence Gala will take place on Saturday, October 3, at Seroma, bringing together 600 swimmers from 30 schools for a competition aimed at nurturing young talent and expanding swimming opportunities across Uganda.
Uganda’s next generation of swimmers will take centre stage this Saturday, October 3, when the 2026 Independence Gala gets underway at Seroma Christian High School.
The event will bring together 600 swimmers from 30 schools for a day of competition, with young athletes hoping to claim medals and showcase their abilities.
Traditionally hosted at Greenhill Academy, the gala moves to Seroma this year as organisers seek to take the competition beyond its usual venue and extend its reach to more schools and swimming communities.
The event will be held at Seroma’s 25-metre short-course pool, providing a new competitive environment for the participating swimmers. This same pool was also used earlier this year for the Uganda secondary school competitions.
The change of venue for the independence gala also reflects the importance of making swimming competitions accessible to a wider audience and encouraging participation in different parts of the country.
One of the gala’s defining features is its non-qualifying-times format, which allows school-going swimmers to participate without having to meet specific qualifying standards.
This makes the competition particularly valuable for beginners and developing athletes who are still finding their feet in competitive swimming. Rather than focusing exclusively on established swimmers, the event provides a platform for young athletes of different abilities to race, win medals and gain valuable experience.
For many participants, the opportunity to compete against swimmers from other schools is an important part of their development. It allows them to assess their progress, build confidence and become familiar with the demands of competitive racing.
The format also allows coaches to evaluate their swimmers’ performances and identify areas that need improvement.
The participation of 30 schools and 600 swimmers highlights the importance of school competitions in expanding swimming in Uganda. Among the schools in this year’s competition are the hosts Seroma Christian High School, Aga Khan High School Kampala, Greenhill Academy, Kampala International School of Uganda (KISU), British School of Kampala (BSK), The North Green School (TNGS), International School of Uganda (ISU), Rainbow International School of Uganda, Kabojja School and others
Events such as the Independence Gala provide a foundation for talent development by introducing more children to competitive swimming and giving them regular opportunities to improve. They also help create a competitive environment in which young athletes can develop their skills and aspirations.
