Uganda Police Handball Club is painting the 2026 domestic season in dominant colours, riding high on an exceptional campaign across both its men’s and women’s wings.

Amid a flurry of stellar performances, marquee signings, and a historic milestone that has shattered glass ceilings for the sport nationwide, head coach Azizi Yakubu remains fiercely optimistic about the path ahead.

Opening up on his side’s remarkable run, Yakubu offered an upbeat assessment of a club firing on all cylinders.

“Police is doing well. The ladies have been unbeaten; they’re still unbeaten. They’ve played three games so far in the second round and won all,” Yakubu remarked.

Highlighting their recent dominance at the Old Kampala Sports Arena, he added, “Last weekend they played against Nkajja and defeated them 53-27. They also played against Makerere University and defeated them 48-31.”

A groundbreaking European milestone

Beyond domestic hardwood exploits, Yakubu pointed to a watershed moment that elevates the profile of Ugandan handball onto the global stage. Patricia Arago has officially become the first Ugandan handball export, taking her prodigious talent from home soil straight to the European top flight.

“So I also want you to know that we just reached a partnership with the European Club that took our player, Patricia Arago,” Yakubu announced. “It’s a big boost for us, getting a player straight from our team to the European top flight side, Kaunas Acme, is a big statement for us.”

This historic transfer stands as a landmark moment for Ugandan handball, showing the growing calibre and international appeal of local talent nurtured within the Police ranks.

Chasing the ultimate double

The momentum extends equally to the men’s division, which is locked in a fiercely competitive title race. Yakubu emphasised that his squad’s ambitions remain unapologetically high for the remainder of the 2026 calendar.

“Our men are also doing well. They are so far unbeaten in the second leg, and our objectives are to go unbeaten and win both titles in this 2026 season,” Yakubu stated.

Fueling this championship charge is a blend of elite returning talent and high-impact new blood.

Singling out the stars lighting up the court, Yakubu noted, “The top players we currently have are Key players now are Shakira Bako, Royce Namutosi, Hilda Abangit, Doreen Ondoa, also a new signing Oliver Katusime, doing wonders. We also have a new signing from Prisons in the name of Victor Obed in the men. He’s also a top, top, top player.”

Concluding on the strategic direction of the institution, Yakubu affirmed, “So all these signings are showing the direction where we are going as a club and also the international partnerships.”

The confidence radiating from the coaching bench is well-founded, backed by commanding statistics across the Uganda Handball National Super League campaigns.

Women’s Division

The defending champions, Police Women’s Handball team, have enjoyed absolute dominance this season. They completed the first round at the summit of the table with a perfect record of 10 wins from 10 matches, staying two points ahead of their rivals, Prisons HC, and maintaining their unbeaten run into the second round at the Old Kampala Sports Arena.

This domestic excellence builds on a trophy-laden year that includes capturing Gold at the 18th Inter-Forces Games in Gulu in September 2026, alongside securing their fourth consecutive UHF Champions League title earlier in April.

The Police Men’s Handball team remains highly competitive in a tightly contested title race, sitting firmly in the top tier of the standings and heavily pressuring league leaders UPDF HC alongside Prisons HC.

Boasting one of the most explosive attacking units in the league, the team secured vital victories as the second round heated up in late September, continuing to close the gap on defending champions UPDF, who handed them a close 38-31 defeat earlier in the first round.

The squad’s competitive edge and steady growth were further highlighted earlier this year when they clinched a Silver medal at the UHF Champions League.
