Lugogo Cricket Oval witnessed a masterclass in aggressive limited-overs cricket on Saturday, as the Kutchi Tigers Cricket Club put on a commanding performance to sweep Tornado Cricket Club in their Men’s UG20 fixtures.

Powered by an explosive afternoon batting display and stellar, disciplined bowling across both encounters, the Tigers secured an 86-run victory in the morning before turning up the heat for a colossal 154-run triumph later in the day.

The clinical double sweep significantly bolstered Kutchi Tigers’ net run rate and fortified their standing in a tight Group A qualification race, having now contested eight matches across four match days.

  • Kutchi Tigers CC 182/8 in 20 Overs
  • Tornado CC 96/7 in 20 Overs
  • Kutchi Tigers CC won by 86 runs

In the opening fixture, Kutchi Tigers won the toss and elected to set a target, posting a competitive 182 for eight in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was anchored by a composed 41 off 30 balls from Mitul Pindoriya, featuring two boundaries and three towering sixes.

Solid contributions flowed down the order: Cyrus Kakuru chipped in with a brisk 31 off 21 (three fours, one six), Hasin Ashani remained unbeaten on a punchy 30 off 17 (three fours, one six), and Ghanshyam Ashani added a quick-fire 24 off 14.

Additional runs came from Obuya Robinson (14), Nitin Jeshani (12), Dhansuk Jesani (10), Avnish Vekariya (7), and Steven Wabwose (5), with Smith Vekariya finishing not out on one alongside seven extras.

Tornado’s bowling attack was led by Jaffer Ochaya, who claimed impressive figures of 3 for 34 in four overs, backed by Sulaiman Mwebaze (2/47), Kassim Adam (2/10 in two overs), and Patrick Oburu (1/11).

Faced with a target of 183, Tornado’s chase never found its rhythm against a suffocating Kutchi bowling unit. Sulaiman Mwebaze fought valiantly with 44 off 57 balls (four fours, two sixes), supported by Lawrence Ssempijja (18) and Ochaya Amir (14).

However, tight spells from the Tigers choked the run flow. Kush Mahesh Vekariya spearheaded the attack with 3 for 33, while Dhansuk Jesani delivered an immaculate, economical masterclass, claiming 2 for 4 in four overs, including two maidens. Avnish Vekariya (1/3), Pindoriya (1/17), and a miserly spell from Wabwose (four overs for just nine runs, including a maiden) restricted Tornado to 96 for seven, sealing an 86-run victory.

If the morning game showcased tactical discipline, the afternoon fixture was an exhibition of pure, unadulterated power hitting. Batting first once again, Kutchi Tigers piled up a staggering 289 for four in their 20 overs, a total that completely took the game away from Tornado.

  • Kutchi Tigers CC 289/4 in 20 Overs
  • Tornado CC 135 all out in 20 Overs
  • Kutchi Tigers CC won by 154 runs

Avnish Vekariya delivered the performance of the day, carving a breathtaking, unbeaten 133 off just 58 deliveries. Bludgeoning 13 fours and 10 massive sixes at a staggering strike rate of 229.31, Vekariya single-handedly demoralised the opposition attack.

He found a phenomenal partner in Nitin Jeshani, who missed out on a well-deserved century by a single run. Jeshani smashed 99 off 42 balls, dispatching seven fours and nine sixes at a blistering strike rate of 235.71 before falling, caught by Ochaya off Mwebaze.

Late fireworks from Kakuru (21 off 12), Obuya (8 off 3), and an unbeaten 17 off 5 balls from Ghanshyam Ashani propelled the total to an imposing 289.

Tornado’s bowlers endured a punishing afternoon. Mwebaze finished with 2 for 61 and Abdulhakim Lugasa took 2 for 40, but the rest of the attack bore the brunt of the onslaught.

Needing 290 for an unlikely miracle, Tornado managed 135 for nine in reply. Mwebaze fought back with a defiant 48 off 49, and Ssempijja contributed an unbeaten 47 off 29 (three fours, four sixes), while Amir chipped in with 18.

But Ghanshyam Ashani ripped through the remaining order, returning stellar figures of 4 for 22 in four overs. Pindoriya, Wabwose, Kush Mahesh Vekariya, and Ghanshyam Halai chipped in with a wicket each to bundle out Tornado 154 runs short.

Reflecting on his match-winning, record-breaking knock that earned him the afternoon Player of the Match honours, a delighted Vekariya emphasised the broader context of the team’s campaign.

“Today’s game was very good. In the second game, we batted first, and we scored like 290 runs. Then me myself have scored like 133. So it has helped my team to gain the run rate,” Vekariya noted.

Acknowledging earlier setbacks including two losses and a washout, he added, “It’s really going to help us. We are looking forward to another game.”

Elsewhere in the competition, Saturday’s action saw several other sweeping statements across different groups;
