Uganda Senior Women’s National Football Team head coach Firew Asefa Hailegebreal has named the new captains for the team ahead of the encounter against Zambia.

The Crested Cranes will face Zambia’s Copper Queens in the first leg of the 2028 Olympic Games second round qualifiers on Thursday at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, with the return leg slated for next week.

Defender Shadia Nankya has been confirmed as the new captain of the team and will be deputised by goalkeepers Ruth Aturo and Vanessa Edith Karungi as first and second assistant captains, respectively.

It should be noted that both Nankya and Aturo have served as captains of the team previously, with the former captaining the team to win the CECAFA Women’s Championship back in 2022.

Aturo, on the other hand, has been the main skipper for the team over the years. However, the armband has been shared by several other players.

Until today’s announcement, Fauzia Najjemba has captained the team in some games, while Hasifah Nassuna also captained the team at one time.

The winner between Uganda and Zambia will face either Mauritius or Ghana at the next qualification phase.
