The YMCA Court in Wandegeya bore witness to a redemption story on Tuesday evening. Breathing new life into their storied franchise, the Kampala-based KIU Titans punched their ticket back to the summit of Ugandan basketball, defeating the YMCA Hamsters 70-60 to seal a 3-1 series victory in the FUBA Division One best-of-five semifinals.
The triumph marks a major milestone in the Titans’ bid to reclaim their place in the country’s top-flight competition, completing an immediate return to the elite National Basketball League (NBL) following a painful relegation in 2025.
Tuesday’s decisive clash was a test of resilience, with the Hamsters refusing to go down without a fight. Yet, KIU’s firepower proved decisive.
Daniel Odonkonyero delivered a stellar performance, producing a game-high 22 points to spearhead the Titans’ offence and secure their place in the Division One final alongside promotion.
He was ably supported by Chieng Garang, who turned in an influential all-round display with a dominant double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, complemented by four assists. Captain Richard Mutawulu chipped in with 10 vital points as the Titans held off a determined home side.
For YMCA, Christian Ndibu once again put on an outstanding individual show, recording 19 points and 15 rebounds. Despite Ndibu’s heroic efforts on both ends of the glass, the Wandegeya-based side ultimately fell short, unable to force a fifth game in the series.
The promotion has been building toward this moment ever since KIU suffered relegation from the NBL in 2025. Rather than buckling, the Titans regrouped under the guidance of head coach Julius Lutwama and steadily rebuilt their campaign.
Their postseason path began with a dominant 2-0 sweep of the Miracle Eagles in the quarterfinals before booking their high-stakes semifinal date with YMCA.
The semifinal series unfolded with dramatic momentum swings;
● September 29 (Game One): KIU drew first blood, taking a 1-0 lead with a 74-57 victory over YMCA.
● October 2 (Game Two): The Hamsters fought back fiercely, winning 81-71 to level the series at 1-1.
● October 5 (Game Three): Regaining control, the Titans secured a 10-point victory to jump 2-1 ahead, putting themselves on the doorstep of promotion. In this crucial outing, Arthur Ryan Akena led the scoring charge with a game-high 23 points, while Odonkonyero anchored the paint with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
● October 6 (Game Four): The Titans officially finished the job with a 70-60 triumph at the YMCA Court.
With their return to the NBL officially confirmed, the Titans can already celebrate the primary achievement of their campaign, which was fighting their way back to where they belong after a single season in Division One.
However, their journey is far from over. The Titans now turn their attention to the Division One final, where they will attempt to crown their comeback season by capturing the ultimate championship title.
Who they will face in that final remains undecided as the other semifinal series between Berkeley and Watoto hangs in the balance.
Berkeley took an early edge, winning Game One 57-55 before edging Watoto 74-70 in a dramatic overtime thriller in Game Two, sealed by a dramatic late three-pointer that forced the extra period.
Watoto responded strongly in Game Three, edging a narrow 51-49 victory to pull one back and seize a 2-1 series lead.
Game Four of that fiercely contested series is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, at the YMCA in Wandegeya at 8:00 p.m.
