Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a 13-year career with the national team.
Aucho announced on Monday October 12, via an official statement. In it, he reflected on his journey with the Cranes and expressed gratitude to the coaches, teammates, football administrators and fans who supported him throughout his international career.
The midfielder made his international debut on November 30, 2013, and went on to earn 77 caps for Uganda, serving as captain and representing the country at three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.
“Today, I officially announce my retirement from international football after an unforgettable 13-year journey representing my country, the Uganda Cranes,” Aucho stated.
The former captain described wearing the national team jersey and leading the side as the greatest privilege of his life.
“From my international debut on November 30, 2013, to earning 77 caps and having the ultimate honour of captaining our National Team, wearing the black, yellow, and red jersey has been the greatest privilege of my life,” he added.
Aucho also reflected on his humble beginnings, recalling how his dream of representing Uganda grew from his childhood days working at Bugembe market.
He highlighted Uganda’s return to the AFCON finals after a 38-year wait as one of the defining moments of his career, alongside competing in three editions of the continental tournament and captaining the national team.
The midfielder paid tribute to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), the administrators, his coaches and teammates for their contributions to his journey.
He singled out former Uganda Cranes coach Fred Kajoba, who has since passed away, for the belief and guidance that shaped his career.
Aucho also thanked the fans, particularly those who supported the team at Namboole and across the country, saying their backing helped the players navigate challenges.
While his playing journey with the national team has come to an end, Aucho insists his commitment to Ugandan football remains unchanged.
“It is now time for a new generation of heroes to step forward, carry the flag and write their own history. I look forward to supporting them as one of Uganda’s biggest fans,” he said.
He added that he leaves the national team with a heart full of gratitude, immense pride and an unbreakable love for his country.
