Uganda Cubs captain Henry Muhozi has expressed delight after being named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2026 CECAFA U17 Championship following Uganda’s triumph in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Cubs were crowned champions after edging Somalia 6-5 in a penalty shootout on Monday at Kigali Pele Stadium, following a goalless draw in normal time.

Muhozi, who captained the side throughout the tournament, was pleased to be recognised as the competition’s outstanding player, describing the award as a great honour.

“I am feeling good. I feel so happy. The tournament wasn’t bad, and because we won, I will say it’s been good,” Muhozi said.

“I am really happy to be named the MVP of such a great tournament. There have been many players in the tournament, but making it as the best is really an honour.”

The skipper also acknowledged the challenge of navigating the tournament all the way to the final, crediting the technical team’s game plan and the players’ hard work for their success.

According to Muhozi, belief within the squad provided additional motivation as the Cubs worked towards lifting the trophy.

“It wasn’t easy to play all the matches to the final. However, it was the game plan from our coaches and the players’ hard work that always saw us through. By believing in ourselves, it was extra motivation to help us make it,” he added.

Uganda’s victory was further inspired by goalkeeper David Dean Ssegirinya, who saved three penalties in the final to help the Cubs overcome Somalia in the shootout. His heroics earned him the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper award.

The regional title marks a memorable achievement for the young Ugandan side, with Muhozi’s individual recognition adding to the celebrations after an impressive campaign.

The Cubs held their nerve from the spot to win 6-5, with Muhozi, Sebastian Fisher, Arnold Kayemba, Nicholas Kawoya, Martin Kayiwa and Junior Ofoyrwoth converting their penalties, while Sumaku Mutawakali and Arafat Ibanda were denied.
