Uganda Cubs forward Sebastian Fisher has described the team’s triumph at the 2026 CECAFA U17 Championship as an unbelievable experience after the side defeated Somalia in Monday’s final in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Cubs clinched the regional crown following a tense penalty shootout, winning 6-5 after the contest at Kigali Pele Stadium had ended goalless in normal time.

Fisher, part of the triumphant squad, struggled to put his emotions into words after the achievement, praising his teammates and the technical team for their efforts throughout the tournament.

“It’s been an unbelievable tournament. I can’t put it into words how I am feeling right now. Honestly, the boys and the coach have been unbelievable, and this group does not deserve any less,” Fisher said.

The midfielder also spoke highly of the passion surrounding African football, highlighting the enthusiasm of supporters and the importance of their connection to the game.

“African football is great. The people and the fans as well have so much passion for the game, and that is important,” he added.

For Fisher, representing Uganda at the tournament was an honour, and he expressed hope that the experience would open doors to further opportunities in his football career.

“It’s been an absolute honour to put on this jersey, and I hope there are more opportunities to come our way,” he said.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper David Dean Ssegirinya played a decisive role in Uganda’s success, saving three penalties in the final to inspire the Cubs to victory. His outstanding performances also earned him the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper award.

Captain Henry Muhozi, Sebastian Fisher, Arnold Kayemba, Nicholas Kawoya, Martin Kayiwa and Junior Ofoyrwoth converted their penalties for Uganda, while Sumaku Mutawakali and Arafat Ibanda were denied.

The victory crowned Uganda champions of the 2026 CECAFA U17 Championship, capping an impressive campaign for the young side.
