Urunani head coach Elvis Hakizimana has praised his players for matching the physical demands of the Road to BAL East Division tournament in Hoima as the Burundian side turns its attention to the Elite 16.

Urunani concluded their group D campaign with an 81-79 victory over Namuwongo Blazers on Sunday at Hoima City Arena, finishing with a strong performance against the Ugandan side.

Hakizimana said his team had to dig deep against two physically demanding opponents, Patriots and Namuwongo, but was pleased with how his players responded.

“It’s a good feeling. We came here from the first game and faced tough games against Patriots and Namuwongo. The games were very physical, but our boys matched the physicality and put up a great show,” he said.

The coach also singled out Coulibaly for praise, describing the forward as the best player on the continent and highlighting his versatility as a major asset to the team.

“I think Coulibaly is the best player on the continent. His versatility allows him to do anything on the playing court. Whenever he is on the court, he gives us flexibility,” Hakizimana added.

Despite the positive showing in Hoima, Hakizimana acknowledged that his team still has areas to improve before the next stage of the competition.

Urunani will return home to review their performances, correct their shortcomings and prepare for the Elite 16, where the competition is expected to become even tougher.

“The local players did a great job, but I am sure we shall be ready going into the Elite 16 tournament,” he said.

Urunani’s victory over Namuwongo denied the Ugandan side top spot in group D, although the Blazers still secured qualification for the Elite 16 after winning three of their four games.

The Elite 16 will provide both sides with another opportunity to pursue qualification for the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
