2027 will predictably be a busy year in school sports domestically, in the East African region, on the African continent and globally on the ISF sports calendar.

In Uganda; domestic competitions across the different sports disciplines will also be action packed.

The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA), the body responsible for running sports in secondary schools has confirmed the different hosts for their five major national championships in 2027.

During an announcement made on Thursday, 29th October 2026 at the GNS Plaza in Kampala, USSSA President Justus Mugisha confirmed St. Kagwa High School, Bushenyi, Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School, Kabalega Secondary School, Nyakasura School, Kyebambe School, Janan Secondary School Bombo, Standard High School Zzana, and Seroma Christian High School among the successful bidders.

The championships to be hosted in 2027 include National Ball Games I and Athletics, the National Football Boys Championship, Ball Games II, the Elite Games, and the Swimming Championship.

Under the hosting arrangements, St. Kagwa High School, Bushenyi, and Bweranyangi Girls Secondary School will jointly host National Ball Games I and Athletics, marking the first time both schools will stage the competition.

Kabalega Secondary School has been awarded the hosting rights for the National Football Boys Championship, while Nyakasura School will host Ball Games II in partnership with Kyebambe School. Kabalega will return to hosting duties for the competition after a 12-year interval.

Janan Secondary School in Bombo will host the Elite Games, co-hosted by Standard High School Zzana, Ndejje Campus, while Seroma Christian High School will be responsible for the Swimming Championship.

Hosts selected after inspections and presentations

Mugisha said the awards followed a competitive process involving advertisements for bids, applications from interested schools, inspections by a joint team of Ministry of Education and Sports and USSSA officials, and formal presentations by the bidding institutions.

The schools made their presentations before a joint panel on Wednesday, October 28, before a meeting chaired by the Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports deliberated and made the final decisions.

According to Mugisha, the selection process was guided by four key principles: regional rotation, the quality of facilities, the potential impact of hosting on schools and cities, and the commitments made by bidders in their proposals.

He said the association considered the need to rotate championships across Uganda’s five regions and within the different zones, while also assessing playing facilities, accommodation, drainage, and the availability of hotels in host cities.

The impact of hosting on participating schools and their surrounding communities was another major consideration, including plans for new playing facilities, stadiums, renovations, and construction. The association also assessed additional commitments made by bidders, including feeding arrangements, tourism, entertainment, and other services outlined in their formal proposals.

Standby schools named:

To ensure continuity in the event that a successful bidder fails to meet the required standards, USSSA has also identified standby hosts for three championships.

Seroma Christian High School in Mukono has been designated as the standby host for National Ball Games I, while Mbarara High School will serve as the reserve host for the National Football Boys Championship.

St. Mary’s College Rushoroza has been named standby host for Ball Games II.

The reserve arrangements are intended to ensure that the championships proceed as scheduled if any of the main hosts fail to fulfil their obligations.

January inspection to determine final confirmation:

Despite the announcement, the successful schools must still satisfy the association’s hosting requirements before their awards are confirmed.

Mugisha said a final compliance inspection would be conducted in January 2027, describing the exercise as a pass-or-fail assessment. Schools that fail to meet the required standards risk losing their hosting rights to the designated standby institutions.

He added that detailed guidelines outlining the non-negotiable requirements would be available at the USSSA Secretariat from Friday, October 30, 2026.

The requirements will cover playing surfaces, pitch drainage, accommodation, security, and medical services.

The Ministry of Education and Sports will also issue official host agreements to the main hosts, binding them to the facilities and additional commitments presented in their bids.

Congratulating the successful schools, Mugisha urged institutions that missed out on the awards to continue improving their facilities in preparation for future hosting opportunities.

He also thanked the Commissioner for Physical Education and Sports and his team, alongside the USSSA Executive Committee, for overseeing the process.

The 2027 hosting awards mark the next phase of preparations for Uganda’s national secondary school sports calendar, with the January inspection expected to determine whether the selected institutions are ready to welcome athletes and teams from across the country.
