Kampala University Ladies lift the Division I title

Kampala University Ladies finally had their moment of glory, beating Seeta High 41-30 in a low-scoring Game Five of the 2026 FUBA Division One finals at the YMCA Court in Wandegeya on Friday to lift the championship with a 4-1 series win.

They had done the hard work throughout the best-of-seven series, but one final hurdle remained. Seeta High needed a win to keep their hopes alive, while Kampala University Ladies were determined not to give their opponents another chance.

The university side held their nerve, surviving a late scare before pulling away to secure an unassailable lead and bring their title-winning campaign to a close.

Kampala University Ladies had set the pace from the opening game, winning 48-43 before taking Game Two to establish a 2-0 advantage, although the exact score was not immediately available.

Seeta High responded in Game Three, edging a close contest 53-51 to reduce the deficit and keep the series alive. But Kampala University Ladies were quick to regain control, winning Game Four 56-47 to move within one victory of the crown.

They returned to the court on Saturday knowing what was at stake and made a positive start, taking the first quarter 16-10 after both teams exchanged baskets in the opening minutes.

Captain Victoria Nalwanga set the tone with a three-pointer before driving to the basket for a lay-up. Rose Musundi and Gloria Ayaa also got involved, with Musundi scoring from a jump shot and Pennitah Nabakooza adding a driving lay-up.

Seeta High were not ready to surrender. Moureen Lawmaka kept them in the contest with some important baskets, including a tip-in lay-up, while Kristine Stephanie and Achomo Lucky also contributed.

Their efforts briefly brought the scores level at 10-10, but Kampala University Ladies finished the quarter better to take a six-point advantage.

The champions continued to dictate the pace in the second quarter, with Musundi stepping up offensively. She converted a three-pointer and added a lay-up, while Nabakooza provided an assist to help the university side extend their advantage.

Asio Mary Divota chipped in from the free-throw line, while Ayaa continued to fight for possession and create opportunities around the basket.

Seeta High struggled to find their rhythm, missing several attempts as Lawmaka and Bilha Akinyi tried to keep them within reach. Kampala University Ladies went into the break leading 23-15.

The supplied match log repeats the second-quarter events under the third quarter, without providing a separate score or statistics for that period. However, the final result showed that Kampala University Ladies managed to protect their advantage before the decisive fourth quarter.

Seeta High made their strongest push late in the game, reducing the deficit to 30-28 through baskets from Akinyi and Namyaalo Christine.

For a moment, the championship celebrations appeared likely to be put on hold, but Kampala University Ladies responded when they needed it most.

Akima Tasha Goi restored some breathing room with a basket before Ayaa scored from a two-point attempt following an assist from Nalwanga to make it 34-28.

Musundi added a free throw, while Ayaa and Nalwanga combined again to keep Seeta High from mounting another serious challenge.

Nalwanga then drove to the basket for a lay-up to stretch the lead to 39-30. With 2:50 remaining, Akima grabbed an offensive rebound and converted a tip-in lay-up to make it 41-30, effectively ending Seeta High’s hopes.

It was the final basket of the game as Kampala University Ladies saw out the remaining minutes and celebrated a title they had worked hard to earn.

Nalwanga led the champions with 13 points, while Musundi contributed 10. Ayaa may have finished with six points, but her influence went beyond scoring, as she collected an impressive 16 rebounds.

Nabakooza and Akima also played important roles on the boards, pulling down 10 and 15 rebounds respectively.

For Seeta High, Lawmaka fought hard despite the defeat, recording seven points and an outstanding 21 rebounds. Stephanie added six points and 12 rebounds in a determined effort that ultimately fell short.

Kampala University Ladies finished the series with four victories from five games, with Seeta High managing only one win, but it wasn’t the icing on the cake. Gloria Ayaa was crowned the Most Valuable Player of the finals by the Uganda Basketball Players Association.
