Uganda will be represented by a familiar women’s team at the 2019 FIBA 3×3 World Cup qualifiers scheduled for May 4-5 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The team was flagged off on Tuesday and the side is comprised of the players who featured at last year’s World Cup in the Philippines.

Claire Lamunu, Jamilah Nansikombi, Rita Imanishimwe and Sarah Ageno who played at last year’s global event travel today for the qualifiers where they will be required to finish among the top three to have a chance of competing at the world cup again.

Uganda, ranked 21st on the planet, is in Pool A along with Estonia (7th) Australia (27th) and the hosts Puerto Rico (63rd). Pool B has Brazil, Spain, New Zealand and Mali.

Format of Qualifying

The pool winners directly qualify for the semifinals while the 2nd and 3rd-placed teams in each pool play a quarterfinal with the winners advancing to the semifinals.

The winners of the semifinals will qualify directly to the FIBA 3×3 World Cup due to take place from June 18-23, 2019 in the Netherlands, while the losers of the semifinals will play a final game for the final qualifying spot.
