Bunamwaya qualify for maiden cup final

Bunamwaya took a step closer to securing their Maiden Bell Uganda Cup with a late 2-0 win against Maroons in the second leg semifinal after winning the first one 0-1. It was as early as the second minute when Tony Odur headed on Cesar Okhuti’s cross only to be denied by Maroons custodian Emmanuel Akol.

On form Martin Muwanga and Okhuti combined again desperate to get onto the score sheet but the later was denied by the impressive Maroons defense. But the

game lacked the traditional passing component the two teams are known for as it was all about kicking and playing the aerial balls.

The best chance of the first half fell to Okhuti who failed to bury his sitter after Odur’s donkey work from the right. Maroons almost broke the dead lock on 25 minutes when George Opio Abege gained possession form Edward Ssali but his low drive was intercepted by Hakim Sekumba over the cross bar.

It was the resulting corner that Edward Muyingo failed to make count as his free header on target but instead wide. On 38 minutes Odur missed with only the advancing Akol to beat but pressured the goalie and in the end handled the ball outside the area It looked like a red card to many but he was only but his captain was also cautioned in the process for protesting, thinking his teammate was going to be sent off.

Maroons almost found the back of the net at the stroke of halftime but Muyingo’s effort couldn’t stand after an infringement on Hamza Muwonge. The second half started lively as Luwaga’s shot from long range was stopped by Akol but minute later the midfielder’s effort missed the target by inches.

When both teams seemed like they were destined for a barren draw, coach Richard Waswa introduced Edgar Luzige on 58 minutes. The clubs league top scorer playing just behind the strikers released Odur five minutes later who rounded Akol before slotting the ball into an empty net to score his fourth of the tournament.

In a space of three minutes he again in similar fashion passed to Luwaga wide left. The sleek midfielder cut inside, created space for himself before shooting meters outside the box. It was his second of the campaign Bunnamwaya play URA on the May 12 in Pece stadium, Gulu District.
