The rugby season started over ten months ago. Fans enjoyed Heathens’ league triumph, the rugby Cranes’ Elgon Cup victory in Nairobi, Kobs’ Uganda Cup success and the Lady Rugby Cranes at the Reunion 7’s and IRB World Cup qualifying campaign in Tunis.
All this came at the cost of players’ sweat as the loyal fans cheered on. Local body Uganda Rugby Union (URU), in conjunction with Kweli Productions is set to give back to the fans through an event dubbed the ‘One Night Stand’ rugby night.
The tourney, first of the kind here will be played under floodlights on Friday at the Legends Bars, former Kampala Club. “It is called a one night stand because the winner will be got before midnight,” Kweli boss Patrick Kanyomozi disclosed to Kawowo Sports.
A total of 12 teams in four groups will take part in the tourney and the winner will take Shs.1.5m. “The teams are a combination of fans and active players,” Kanyomozi added.
Among the teams set to thrill the night include the 2007 CAR winners in Madagascar and Wazee (veterans). The games will be played in a 7s format for 14 minutes and each side must have two ladies on the team with one on pitch all the time.
During the intervals, fans will have other games and entertainment from musicians all under a carnivore atmosphere. URU has also partnered with Nile Breweries, Rwenzori, Daily Monitor and KFM. All tickets will be sold at the gates at Shs.5000.
