ICC AFRICA WOMEN’S T20 WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

Yesterday’s Results

Kenya 56/9 Uganda 58/6

Zimbabwe 80/9 Tanzania 75/9

South Africa 165/5 Uganda 28/10

Team Uganda was mauled by South Africa in their third match by 137 runs at the ongoing ICC Africa Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers in Dar es Salaam yesterday afternoon.

The Naomi Kayondo-led side thought they had recovered from their poor start after a morning four-wicket win over Kenya at the University of Dar es Salaam grounds. But the dreams of making their first global tourney in Bangladesh due 2014 were shattered again by the non-scoring side at the Annadil Burhani grounds.

The South Africans set 165 runs for five wickets after batting the allotted 20 overs. Before their innings bowled off, the score had already looked distant for Coach Henry Okecho’s charges. Just like on the bat, the South African girls’ quick deliveries tore down the batting order in less than half the innings.

Wickets fell from the start. After the first over, only one run was on board and the opening pair had been depleted. By the fourth over, it looked like there was no recovery for the ship as the storm continued to shake and pile misery. There were only 18 runs on board with six batters off the crease line.

Indeed, there was nothing much to expect from the last two pairs. They were never hesitant and eventually, it was all over after eight overs. Team Uganda were all out for 23 runs, something one would call a poor display.

The girls had earlier scored their first points (two) against Kenyan girls at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) oval. The Kenyans set 56 runs for a nine-wicket loss before the Ugandans chased to win by 58 runs with four wickets in hand.

Uganda, last year’s Africa T20 champions will have no break as they face off with Zimbabwe at the UDSM grounds this morning and skipper Kayondo has already urged her teammates not lose focus.

Unlike Uganda, Zimbabwe (three points) is yet to lose. They shared spoils with South Africa on Sunday after their game was washed out and defeated Tanzania by five runs yesterday.
