Having failed to recover from their narrow four-run loss to Tanzania on Saturday, Botswana felt more pain as they suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Nigeria on Sunday morning at Lugogo oval.
“We still had the chance to win but then let go as it progressed,” Botswana team manager Razal Sheriff told Kawowo Sports.
Led by captain Karabo Modise, in at three with 86 off 64 including 10 fours and five sixes, Botswana set 123-5. Hepens caught by Chimezie Onwuzilike off Joshua Ogunlola (2/15).
He came to the fulcrum after the opening partnership of Denzil Sequeira (seven off 19) and Karabo Motliyanka was broken after just four deliveries.
Motliyanka went for a duck after he was caught by Sequeira suffered a leg before wicket (lbw) from Chimezie’s bowling (2/15) at 56. `
Botswana would have restricted Nigeria to low score but poor fielding cost them yet again.
Oladoyon Olayoji was dropped thrice before he finished with unbeaten 67 runs off 41 (five fours and three sixes) while skipper Kunle Adegbola added 15 off 16 as Nigeria reached 127-3 with 3.3 overs to spare.
Against Tanzania, Botswana failed to reach 138 runs and collapsed at 133 runs. At on time, they needed 40 runs from the last seven overs and five wickets fell within a space of 4.5 overs which brought the mess.
