Jimmy Akena and Dipu Rupariela


Jimmy James Akena Obote has been elected President of the Federation of Motorsports Clubs of Uganda (FMU) for the next four years.

Akena had a rather easy victory winning over his two rivals; George Kagimu and John Burrows Lumu in an elections held on Wednesday at Kati Kati restaurant in Lugogo. 

Akena garnered 56 votes, while former FMU president George Kagimu collected 16 votes. John Burrows managed only two votes. 

Akena becomes the seventh FMU president since the formation of the federation in 2000.

In his first speech as president, Akena promised a consolidated workforce to run the federation business. 

“I am committed to work with every body and to see that this sport grows,” said Akena. 

“We have before us the new sports law. It will require all of us to put every effort to see that the federation is able to maintain it’s position in the tier one sports and be able to access that all comes with the tier one sports, he added. 

Hajji Hamid Gombe was elected Vice President, a seat he held before from 2016-2020. Gombe beat Julius Serujongi by 53-18 votes. 

Reynolds Kibira was unopposed for the General Secretary post, as well as his deputy Jackson Serwanga. 

Joshua Mayanja equally unopposed for the Deputy Vice President Technical in charge of motor rallying seat.

Arthur Blick Jr was elected Deputy Vice President in charge of motorcycling edging George Semakula and Darbella Apolot to the post. 

Angella Semukuttu comes as the only female on the management committee after coming unopposed to the post of Deputy Vice President Vintage and Touring. 

The new FMU management starts work amidst governance challenges with a pending legal issue and investigation in federation accountability by the office of the Inspector General of Government.
