Nemostars’ captain George Aporu and former KAVC centre blocker Irene Adeke might leave the Uganda Volleyball Federation annual awards tonight smiling from ear to ear.
Aporu has been nominated five times more than any other player in the seven categories lined up at Grand Global Hotel, Makerere.
The inspirational skipper is in pole position for the biggest award on the night, ‘Most Valuable Player’ (MVP) together with the holder from last season Nkumba’s Dickens Otim.
Aporu’s teammates Tom Amou, Louis Mubangizi, Smith Okumu, and KAVC’s Pierre Kamugasha are the other nominees.
The 25-year old is also nominated in the best attacker (he won it last season), receiver, blocker and server categories respectively.
“We (Nemostars) had a good season,” said Aporu
“It’s not about me, we are four in total from Nemostars anyone stands a big chance just like me.”
“Though being nominated five times is overwhelming for me,” he added.
Aporu was the main orchestrator as Nemostars won their second straight league title, on top of seven other titles in 10 finals.
Adeke has the most nominations in the women’s category, four in total.
Adeke is in the MVP category alongside Nkumba’s duo of Astreede Agaaba and Eunice Amuron, together with the Ndejje quintet of Christine Alupo, Jesca Kaidu, Maureen Mwamula, Saidat Nnungi, and Peace Busingye.
“The list is too long, doubt if I stand a chance but will hope for the best,” Adeke said.
The Vision Volleyball Camp recruit is also listed in the best blocker, server and attacker categories respectively.
Men and women league champions Nemostars and Ndejje Elites will also be decorated with medals and trophies tonight.
