When Sky Volleyball Club was established at the beginning of last year, their intentions were made clear from the onset, to win every tournament on the calendar. It didn’t look a tall order since almost 90 percent of the players recruited were winners from their former clubs.
Sky ended up with one title, the Kampala International University Open Championship. They lost two other finals and faltered in the semifinals of the other tournaments, on top playing in the newly established Serie C.
At the end of 2013 another club, Vision Volleyball Camp (VVC) came to the fore. Mainly women, VVC have the reigning most valuable player Irene Adeke, not to mention setters Viola Akisa and Shamim Makongoro who have five league titles between themselves.
But still Proprietor and coach Hannington Nsubuga refuses to see his side in same league as Sky. “Our focus has never been on this year,” Nsubuga stated. “If we win anything major then that will be a big bonus, but we are looking at 2015 as a year to go out,” he added.
Though that is said, Nsubuga asserts that VVC won’t be the whooping girls this season. “Someone will have to have trained like we have to get past us.” “If you come with a mediocre approach trust me we will put you in your place,” he added.
VVC’s first attempt on competitive volleyball will be at the Makerere Open from February 15-16 and the Joan Cox Memorial tournament seven days later. But also keep their fingers crossed that the Sports Organizing Committee doesn’t start a second league serie for the women.
