In a move to develop the game of volleyball in Uganda, the Uganda Volleyball Federation Schools Commission introduced the U16 and primary schools category at this year’s All Girls Volleyball Championship.
“Schools start spotting talent as soon as the children enter senior one, but it will take those players a while before they can get competition” School’s commission head Edgar Karungi told uvbf.org. “The idea of the U16 is to give these players learning the sports a platform to exercise what they have learnt but also growing their confidence”
It was Maryhill High School from Mbarara who came out on top after defeating Nabisunsa Kittens in the final (2-1)19-21, 25-9, 25-20. Nabusunsa Kittens had beaten Iganga girls (2-0) 25-20, 27-25 while Mary Hill had won against Kawempe Muslim (2-0) 25-20, 25-17 in the semi finals
In the primary school’s category three schools turned for and it was Sunrise Primary School who edged Samaritan Primary School Namugongo in another exciting final that ended in favor of the former (2-1) 16-25, 25-14, 25-20.
The games were graced by the host headmistress Sister Pauline Namuddu, the President of Uganda Volleyball Federation Mr. Sadik Nasiwu and a special Guest speaker Advocacy Manager Ms. Lillian Mpabulungi Ssengooba whose talk carried the theme “Balancing Academics and Sports”. She encouraged the young girls to make volleyball their number one brand.
